The '72 up bus (and vanagon, they're all VERY similar) were much better than the 71 down engines in terms of longevity. You can expect a type IV motor (as they're known) to last at least 100K, and 150K isn't all that uncommon. Type I engines were known to last about 60K in a bus.

I'd expect that the vanagon and fuel injected buses ('75 up, and 74 ca models with auto tranny, perhaps others?) gained some longevity from the fuel injection, but there were problems with the 2.0 liter bus and vanagon engines dropping valve seats, and getting cracks in the exhaust port area.
