Yes, you remembered right. When I first used it in the 70's, I use to leave it in for 20K miles.. It is good for more than that but it does get very dirty and smelly!.. I decide that it's really pushing it.. so when I had my first brand new car (Audi Fox), I decide to go 10K per change.

As for manufacturers recommendation of 3K miles, that is a very conservative number even for regular oil... and I think it is only in the US (What do they recommend in Canada?) I know in the UK, the recommendation is 10K miles per change even for non-synethics and back in Malaysia, the recomendation is "once a year"..
