Well, I happen to really like the VW brand synthetic but since it is almost $22 a quart most folks don't use it! I have had good reports from most of the major brands such as Redline MTL and Amsoil. I'm sure that other people have had good success with other brands. What is important is that the oil is a GL4 rated gear oil. Other ratings such as GL5 and 6 can contain some sulphur compounds which have been noted by VW to attack the type of brass that is used in the syncro rings. To counteract this all of the syncro rings in the later 091 gearboxes are now fully moly-coated and VW switched to their 'flavor' of synthetic GL4.
