Richard I had an '84 until just recently. Nothing unusual if your familiar with the common problems to all of these beasts. If your used to an air-cooled, you may not be bothered with the lack of power in a 1.9L but I was greatly impressed with the up-grade to the 2.1L. My lust for just a few more horses has been quelled when I went to a Vanagon with just a bit more. Interestingly, my gas mileage is actually better with my two 2.1 Syncros with 2.1's than it was with the 1.9 2wd.
