For the mechanic types out there I have a couple of questions about tools.
I bought a set of sockets and combination wrenches from Sears (metric and
standard). My idea is to put them in a tool box to take with me on my 90
Westy Syncro adventures to remote places.
Well, I noticed that the set of wrenches and sockets are missing certain
sizes in the sequence. And there are many sizes that are duplicated between
the 1/4, 3/8, & 1/2 drives (& regular/deep sockets).
So my questions are:
1. Are the missing sizes needed for a Vanagon?
2. Are the duplicated sizes necessary?
3. Are there other tools I should definitely take that are not on my list
below?
4. Are the Standard wrenches & sockets needed for anything other than the
Westy interior?
While I'm not a mechanic I am handy and don't want to feel helpless if
something simple breaks in a remote place. On the other hand the Westy has
limited space and weight capacity (especially so on these long trips I
take) so I don't want to take a lot of stuff I don't need.
Any way here's what I have:
METRIC sockets:
1/4"-- 4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13mm ........... deep sockets: 4,5,6,7,8,9,10
3/8"-- 8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16mm ........ deep sockets: 9,10,11,12,13,14
1/2"-- 17,18,19,--,21,22,--,24mm
STANDARD sockets:
1/4"--5/32, 3/16, 7/32, 1/4, 9/32, 5/16, 11/32, 3/8, 7/16, 1/2..
deep: 3/16, 7/32, 1/4, 9/32, 5/16, 11/32, 3/8, 7/16, 1/2,
3/8"-- 5/16, 3/8, 7/16, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8, 11/16, 3/4 (no 32nd increments
here)
deep: 3/8, 7/16, 1/2, 9/16
1/2"-- 21/32, 11/16, 3/4, 13/16, 7/8, 15/16 (why the 21/32? and not 5/8?)
METRIC combination wrenches:
8, 9, 10,--, 12, 13, --, 15, 16 ,17, 18mm (are 11,14mm not needed?)
STANDARD combination wrenches:
--, 5/16, 3/8, 7/16, 1/2, 9/16, 5/8, 11/16, 3/4 (would 1/4 be handy?)
In addition to the above I have added:
1/4 x 3" extension, 3/8 x 3" & 6"extensions, & 1/2 to 3/8 adapter
Metric Hex Keys: 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 4.5, 5, 5.5, 6, 7, 8mm
Standard Hex Keys: 5/64, 3/32, 7/64, 1/8, 9/64, 5/32, 3/16, 7/32, 1/4,
5/16, 3/8
Assortment of Slotted and Philips Screw Drivers
Small & Large Crescent (sp?) wrenches
Regular Pliers & Needle nose Pliers
Large Channel Licks
Wire strippers, crimpers, 12v tester, electrical tape, assorted
connectors,
hack saw blade, small cinch ties
