Good question...

This is the problem...

If it does work in a 2WD... why not...

Then why not get some real answers?

Seeing how the wasserboxer is a bad design and most people will jump at the chance to get a 5 cylinder in their Vanagon... so what if you can't swap bellhousings! Bolting it physically in place would be some fancy adapters to go to factory mounts... shift linkage - I'm sure that isn't impossible too.

I don't consider this a waste of bandwidth - if we don't ask questions ( with revevant content even ) then why have a Vanagon list? Experts like Todd are on the list have rebuilt more than enough transmission and could shed some light on the subject. It is amazing that Audi and VW parts are so alike. People told me that installing a 4 cylinder Audi engine in my Vanagon would never work so why waste my time - heck they don't even look the same! I have come to the realization that VW isn't going to support the Vanagon forever. If I can use more common Audi transmission with a few mods then why not?

I have an Audi Fox transmission... I'll disect it if someone tells me what to look for. This will get us towards some "solid" answers.
