Several years ago on a long trip my 85 Vanagon GL started to act as though it was starving for gas, finally to the point that it would wheeze to a stop on the interstate. It would start but it had no power. Let it cool and everything returned to normal until it heated up again. Then the same thing happened again.=20

Cure: replace the oxygen sensor.

Don't know if this is the problem below, but worth checking.
