Jeff, Sounds like the FI temperature sensor. My 85 Westy will do this about once every two months, try removing the connector cleaning the contacts and then putting the connector back on. If that does not effect anything try installing a new sensor. It's a cheap and easy thing to try first, and I bet that's it. What happens with the bad connection is the FI gets a cold start signal and turns up the fuel injection.

I have a problem restarting my 84 Vanagon after it has been running for a while. The van runs fine until I turn it off, and try to restart it. It won't start and there is a strong gas smell. If I wait for 45 minutes, it starts no problem and runs great until I turn it off. Anyone have any ideas ?
