Michael,

The speed at 4000 RPM with a .815 would be @ 78 MPH. The actual speed would be determined by the tire height.

The RPMs do not drop a lot from the four speed .85 fourth gear. That is why I decided to go with a .70 fifth gear not a .82 when it was rebuilt. At 4000 RPMs I can go @95 MPH with a top speed of @133 befor the rev limiter would activate. I had a taller fifth put in to cut the RPMS, now they will be @ 3100 RPM at 70 MPH.

Currently on my vanagon, 4000 RPM IS 72 MPH. I cruise 50 miles a > day on the freeway, non stop, at around 75 MPH. A reduction of the RPM's > would be nice.

To reduce your RPMS get a taller than stock .815 gear installed. Weddle Engineering [(562) 598-2731] Can install a .70 fifth gear.

I am in the process of rebuilding my engine and adding the 5 speed. I am doing performance enhancements to my 2.1L engine. This will help the fuel mileage and the power. The only real gas saving switch was to a .70 fifth gear. Since all the injectors fire at the same time, I needed to reduce the total number of times the injectors would fire to actually increase gas mileage. When the engine is in and running, I plan to go to 15" rims and a choose a tire height (now @26") to set the RPMs to @3100 at 70.

Robert
