Not sure that I can speak to all of your questions, but:

I can't see mine in daylight, also the fridge is full of 'stuff' so I couldn't see it anyway). At night (all interior lights off) I can hear and see the flame light as I look under the fridge. To make sure, I go around outside and listen at the flue vent and sniff for fumes.

Many people have taken the fridge out and opened the burner chamber to clean it (and clean ALL of the back of the fridge) out. I am one of those, and my burner chamber had a lot of crud in it. There are good directions in the archives. I found that taking the stove, sink top off helped a lot in removing the fridge.
