The socket is the electrical part. I got the socket out of a VW in a wrecking yard. If I remember correctly, the rear fog light bulb is a smaller (size-wise) bulb, but it is brighter than the regular tail light because of the reflector in the lense. I ran a separate wire because I was pressed for time, so I'm not sure that a wire exists in the harness. If there is a "factory" wire in the harness, it may be tied with the headlight wires because, in Europe, the factory fog lamps are tied to the dipped, or low, beams. They turn off when the brights are activated. Hopefully, this helps. The British VW dealer had the microfiches for ALL vanagons; we cross matched many parts by verifying part numbers because VW did not change part numbers of common parts when their vehicles were made for different markets. Ask your local VW dealer to look through their microfiches, if they still have them. Possibly this could show where the fog light wiring ran and give you an idea if it exists in your vehicle.

To any of our Canadian friends: do the Canadian spec vanagons have factory front and/or rear fog lights?
