Take a voltmeter (with one clip lead if poss). Clip that lead to either end connection. Turn on demister. Using the *side* of the probe tip, *not* the point, lay it on the other end of a stripe -- should see 10+ volts there. Now slide the probe along the stripe until voltage suddenly vanishes. That's your break. Locate it closely, mark it on the glass, not the stripe, and go on to next stripe. When you've found them all, go to FLAPS and get demister repair kit (tiny bottle of conductive paint, masking material, brush). Apply as directed, and heed the warning about not using the demister for X hours until the paint is thoroughly dry. Afterwards be very gentle washing inside of rear window, like the PO should have been -- the stripes are just paint, you can ruin in ten seconds with a scrubbing pad.

Alternative test, use an ohmmeter/continuity checker with the demister *off*. Most digital continuity checkers beep on anything less than 1 Kohm or so, should work fine. Don't know whether the light-type will work, probably will.
