Subject: Exhaust leak and Frozen engine questions

2 questions today, now that Winter is imminent: (86 GL)

1. My engine has gotten noisy in the last week, and when I crawled beneath it, I discovered a couple of small holes in one of the exhaust pipes. I'd like to put off replacing it until Spring if possible. Any suggestions? I've been thinking of wrapping some aluminum around it with a couple of clamps -- but don't know if it'll hold up under that heat.

2. We're considering another Christmas trip to Minnesota (where my family is), and it brings back memories from the last trip. 2 years ago it was 30 below zero the day after Christmas when we had to drive back to Indiana. The van ran terribly, except after we would pull off and rest and leave the engine running -- then it ran fine for 20-30 miles. It did this all the way to Chicago, where the temperatures were a balmy 20 degrees, and the van ran fine. Is there something I can put in front of the radiator to prevent its getting so cold? Or am I mistaken in my diagnosis.

Thanks.

Scott
