Could possibly be the dreaded cracking of the 3rd/4th gear
hub syndrome.  That description sounds fairly characteristic
of when it begins to fail.  I'd go ahead with the GL4 rated
synthetic gear oil change that you have planned for this
weekend.  If it works-then great!  Cheap fix!  If it doesn't
then you are no worse off than before.  (Trans time)
