My 5-speeds are $1650 with no core and they are brand new. If you were putting one of these in a waterboxer you could sell your waterboxer tranny (for $600-800) and the 5-cylinder bellhousing ($200-300) and concievebly have the new 5 speed tranny for around $850 at the most plus the cost of the linkage ($350 but I am checing into that to see if I can get it cheaper from SA).
