Hey Vicki. When I have a tear in my sails, I use a special mending tape for sails. it can be purchased at any marine store. It's pretty strong stuff, and it's great for quick temp repairs. You might want to read the direction to make sure it will work on canvas, I'm not sure. They don't use cotton sails anymore. They use synthic materials like Dacron for sails today. You can even purchase canvas needles and thread and sew the tear in the canvas right through the mending tape. That way it will hold for a few years.
