Alan, I drove my '85 GL from Anchorage, Alaska to Birmingham, Alabama a while back. Just me driving. 4500 miles in 7 days. If that doesn't qualify for a long distance in a Vanagon, I don't know what does.

On the trip, somewhere in Montana, I had a crack develop in the exhaust pipe. It broke completely in half. Was a noisy ride from there on but tolerable because the engine and the exhaust system are in the rear. Can't imagine how bad it would have been if the van had been a front wheel drive type.

The waterpump failed just 60 miles from my destination.

New pipes, waterpump, coolant flush and new coolant had me up and running in no time. Dealer did the work. Cost $960.

But I was happy. No engine damage.

Subject: Long Distance Moving to Portland Oregon.

I am relocating to the Portland, OR area around Christmas. My '83 Vanagon is my primary vehicle, but is second to my wife's newer Voyager. We (the wife and I) are weighing the pro's vs con's of the drive. The big point is the survivability of ourselves and the van. Has anyone shipped a Vanagon long distance?? If so any offerings of a shipping agencey/vehicle hauler?? We have one bid for $850. I will have to pocket the majority of the expense .
