I've had best success at shorter locking and unlocking times by driving in a slight arc. I theorize that there needs to be a little differential action for the locking mechanism to become alligned properly befor locking or unlocking. Despite VW's advice to "drive straight ahead", if my theory is right, driving exactly straight on a smooth surface and both axles move at the same pace and will never bring the mechanism into allignment. I use a consistant, slight arc and "think" my lock / unlock times are shorter. Never really tested it, could just be placebo effect. :)
