I had a problem with the pins on my 87 syncro. Instead of excess play, the lower pin was not sliding in the carrier smoothly which prevented one end of the caliper from fully returning from the engaged position. If I remember correctly, it somehow allowed the caliper to shift ever so slightly when I went over bumps, around corners, etc... I cleaned up the corrosion on the guide pin with some emery paper, lightly greased the pin, and reassembled. No more noise and brake pad wear is normal again...
