Amount of air flow from outside through heater core to windscreen defroster outlets. At far left: off. At far right: fully open. 2. Amount of water flow to heater core. At far left: off, that is cold. At far right: fully open, that is hot (or rather: warm :-) 3. Amount of air flow from outside through heater core to driver's and front passenger's feet. At far left: fully open. At far right: off. 4. Amount of air flow from outside to the roof vents. At far left: fully open. At far right: off. Control #2 regulates the temperature for both, windscreen defrosting (#1) and normal heating (#3) while these latter two controls just regulate the amount of air flowing to these two places. Control #4 is sort of a master control for the roof vents because each roof vent can be controlled individually, too. If you ask VW why controls #3 and #4 work the other way round as #1 and #2 and as you'd normally expect, you'll get the answer that with the controls designed this way it's most easy to set up your Vanagon for quick defrosting in winter by simply pushing all the controls to the utter right end and switching the fan to positions 2 or 3. I hope this helps.
