Yes, more cumbersome, but I've gotten used to it.

>18MPG vs 20+ for standard Vanagon

Gas is cheap anyway.

>More difficult to shift than 2WD Vanagon

Speaking of shifting, I've been having some trouble shifting my '87 syncro without feeling a little friction going into gear. Sometimes it's fine and smooth; it goes from one gear to the next without any noise or the feeling that I'm rubbing against metal. But sometimes, more than usual, it's a little rough. Anyone know what I mean?

Am I shifting too slowly? Too quickly? Wrong RPMs? Is this normal?

>Weird gas tank; Very difficult to get full. Doesn't vent very well.

I noticed this one when I drove away from the pump thinking I must have gotten a good deal on a tank of gas, then looking down to see it was only 3/4 full!

Anyway, I would go with the syncro if you really think you'll use it. I've only had mine a month so I can't say much. But if I was just using my vehicle to get around town and travel around when the weather's nice, I'd get a vanagon. Hey, if you live in areas with lots of snow, the city/county usually takes care of that problem for you. Since obviously not everyone owns/can afford a four wheel drive, nor do they all own front wheel drives.

I live in Spokane, WA, where they get lots of snow (it's supposed to be 4-6" tonight). I see lots of vanagons (non-syncro) around. They usually plow the main roads pretty well around here. Most of my college friends can't even afford snow tires-but they manage to get around.

Hope it helps--

Jarod Bishop '86 syncro gl
