Thanks all for the help. It simply was a matter of switching the vacuum lines on the transmission lockout box. All is now operating to spec. The previous owner did tell me that the transmission had been rebuilt recently. To those of you who are not sure if their differentials are working when locked, take it from a newcomer to syncros - there is really no way you would not feel a difference when it is engaged. Once again thanks all.
