--------------------------- Hi again Volks, I have been learning a little about rear end and manual transmission lubricants. It seems there should be a difference between api gl4 and gl5 and how some companies label a products with both is beyond me. Here is a note from the mobil web site on the subject. If I read the following correctly mobil gl5 is ok to use in a rear axle but not a transmission that requires gl4. Since our vanagons use a transaxle where the rear end and gears use the same lubricant we best use an api GL4 rated lubricant as Todd Hill seems to be trying to beat into our thick heads. Thanks Todd. Hope this help clear this up for others. Darrell

from the mobil.com web site Application Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lubricant is suitable for all automotive applications where lubricants meeting MIL-PRF-2105E, API Service GL-5, are recommended. It can also be used in rear axles where an API Service GL-4 lubricant is recommended. It should not be used in transmissions requiring an engine oil or automatic transmission fluid, or GL-4 performance level.
