Austin, The engine in the 86 vanagon should be 2.1L so it should fit fine.

The shipping I would run @$150 to $200, I do not know an exact price though.

Would you be rebuilding the engine yourself?

I am rebuilding my engine and doing some custom things to improve performance and mileage. I have ceramic coating my heads, exhaust, pistons, valves and bearings. I have counter-weighting my crankshaft and balancing the rotating parts. I have also reduced the valve train reciprocating weight by about 60 percent. I have replaced all engine compartment hoses and all electronics except the brain. I have replaced my 4 speed with a locking diff 5 speed. Stock .85 fifth gear was replaced with a .70 gear. Engine RPMs at 70mph will now be around 3100 RPMs not 4000 RPMs and top speed in 133+mph. I am building the engine to take 7000 RPMs easily. I know that the rev-limiter will kick in at 5600, I did it so the engine will not be stressed if I hit the rev-limiter. (I might disable it one day)

All parts were 10 years old and with the new engine and tranny I wanted to replace old parts that could break down ant any moment to be safe when taking long trips. My cost for the engine rebuild and all replacement parts except the tranny($2035 plus shifter costs) will be @$3000. I am working on a place/parts/price list from the different vendors. All parts should arrive by next Friday, then in about a week of assemble and installing I will be on the road again...

Let me know wnat you would like to do... Robert
