My understanding is that Matt stated he could get fully rebuilt with a gear change for the $800 figure and a used gearbox for $300. If thats the case then $300 for a good condition early Vanagon 091 gearbox is about right. Cores for this generally run from $100-$175 depending on the condition of the gearbox and mood of the owner. Now for the $800 on a full rebuild with a custom gear- thats about $200-$250 less than what I normally charge. I'd be curious as to what goes into that 'full' rebuild and what brand of gear they are using to see whats different from mine.
