I wish you well... I too em a owner/operator of an 87 GL Syncro and so far your plans sound good to me. Carry on! I just recently had to replace the seal that resides between the engine case and the oil cooler. It too started out with a small drip that soon turned into a cascade of oil on the road - 5 quarts in about 3.5 miles! Good thing the EPA wasn't following that day.
