Question 3: I have the same problem with my vanagon. The thing where the master cylinder is mounted on (I guess it is called brake booster) has some bad sealings. On its back, the air is not escaping but sucked in (where the brake pedal is connected). I guess the problem would be solved with a new booster (expensive!!!).
