I live in Spokane, WA and my 85 vanagon has been everywhere, from the very frigid north to the tropics. It has lasted 194000 on the same engine, I believe, partly because of my switching from 20W50 to 10W30 oil for the cooler and colder climates. Here in Spokane, I change from 20W50 to 10W30 mid Sept/early Oct. I'll switch back to 20W50 in late Apr/early May (depending on the temperature. I have alway used either Castrol (preferred) or Pennzoil. I've changed oil every 3 to 4000miles and have done the filter at the same time every time.
