I finally got that additional info on the drain plug for Vanagons that can't be retapped for a new traditional plug.

My mechanic sells a device called an Oil-Tite Oil Drain Plug. Size: 1/2 inch, Universal fit. It's made by a company called Motormite.

The idea is you insert the plug into the drain hole, and turn the wingnut until the inserted part of the rubber plug expands to fill the hole. Not elegant, but functional. The part number is #65200, and I completely forgot to ask how much. But my mechanic said that it should be available at any FLAPS.
