Volks -

I have been lurking for a few weeks, and learned lots of interesting stuff. Now I have a question.

One of you was kind enough to re-post some information on an 87 Westy at a good price in Raleigh NC. I have been corresponding with the owner, and would like to buy it from him, but - I'm in Moscow Idaho.

He's willing to deliver it to my mom in Atlanta, and I can fly back next spring and pick it up (yes, this is getting a bit complicated) but I would like to hire a competent mechanic in Raleigh to take a look at it for me before paying him. The owner says he does most of his own work, and has only used the dealer to do a new water pump, head flanges (?) and a 4-wheel alignment.

Anyone in the area who can recommend a mechanic, or who knows if the dealer is OK?

Any suggestions for things I can do to save myself from real problems in a deal like this? It might sound crazy, but $6000 for an '87 in good condition looks like a really good price from out here, even throwing in a plane ticket and a week on the road.

Thanks for any help you can offer!

Mike Finkbiner 83.5 Westy
