Subject: Ignition wire slipping off?
Comments: To: Vanagon List <Vanagon@VANAGON.COM>

Hey all,

I've got a kind of silly problem that I haven't got a real good solution for yet.

I had a great deal of trouble a while back with not starting. After replacing the starter/solenoid and electrical side of the ignition switch it turned out the the mechanical part of the switch and the metal collar were worn enough so it wasn't engaging the electrical components.

Anyway, after all this my '80 Vanagon wouldn't start the other day. After trying to charge the battery and finding it wasn't down I looked underneath. The ignition wire had slipped off the spade connector. Most U.S. ignition harnesses use loop connectors and have a nut to hold them on securely. I put it back on and it slips back off, usually at a most inopportune time. It isn't hard to reach unless I park up against a curb but I want a better way to keep it on.

I haven't decided if I should just try to crimp the slide connector a bit or just solder it on and put some kind of plug connector that locks in line. Anyone else have any thoughts?

Kind regards --

-- Wil
