Subject: '86 still running rich
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"
Hello Peoples!!
I still haven't gotten my '86 GL to run right. I have checked the blue
temp sender. It is within the normal range for temp vs.. resistance. I
checked the temp sensor from the ECU connector and it is the same as when
checked at the sensor. The O2 sensor is not working correctly. It shows an
erratic output ranging from 0.3 volts to 1.8 volts. The readings don't
change when the mixture is enriched with the fuel pressure regulator. The
engine runs the same when in open the O2 sensor is connected or not.
There is also a problem with the idle stabilizer. It is not receiving
pulses to open it. I checked the idle stabilizer valve and it opens and
closes when a 12 volt signal is applied. I don't know if the idle
stabilizer has an effect at throttle positions beyond idle. I pulled the
idle stabilizer out and check the circuit board. It was clean and free of
broken solder joints. I also cleaned the connections, with no observable
benefit.
I checked the AFM temp sensor and wiper resistance's. These too where
correct. I did bend the wiper on the AFM. I also tried to improve the too
rich condition by moving the AFM spring. This did improve the operation
when warmed up, but it still runs rich and the van will not start or run
very well when cold.
I have placed an O2 sensor and blue temp sensor on order. I don't
think they will solve the problem. The O2 sensor was not working right
before the engine was replaced. the old engine ran well, if just slightly
rich due to the faulty O2 sensor. It still would push the van to 75+mph and
get around 17 mpg. I drove the van last night to work. 50 miles round
trip. It had less power and terrible gas mileage. I put a can of fuel
injector cleaner in it in hopes its just the injectors slobbering.
Any ideas would be welcome.
