I did the math on this one, and found that with the ride height of a non-syncro Vanagon, the largest tire size that would fit did not make enough of a difference to get the engine rpms much lower. I would love to post exact numbers, but I did this about 2 years ago, and concluded that I needed a tranny.

Yep, I have an unknown tranny in there. No idea of the condition or its past. I also bought a second as a spare. :)
