Subject: South African SERIOUS mud flaps

Hey guys--

I was just at James Cohen's house picking up a South African grill (see separate post) and he showed me some mud flaps he got from VW in South Africa. They look different than the mud flaps in the Just Kampers catalogue and very different than the mud flaps from the factory on my bus. They seem more serious. More like truck mud flaps--heavier than the US VW Vanagon mud flaps.

These mudflaps are a molded plastic rubbery kind of material, about a half- inch or so thick. They are all black, both the fronts and the rears. There is no VW emblem on the rear mud flaps like the ones in Just Kampers.

I've seen the picture of flaps in Just Kampers, and these South African flaps that James has are definately different than those. The mud flap has additional part that extends under the bus in the wheel well where the Just Kampers flap seems only to ride under the wheel well and up the outside of the body for a few inches.

I don't know how best to describe these mud flaps. I suppose a picture would be best. They are molded to conform to the contours of the body. But again, extend into and under the wheel well as well as up the body for a few inches. But even the South African brochure on the Vanagon (microbus) doesn't have a good clear picture of the mud flaps. (probably not the strongest marketing point, what with the 5 cyl. engine and all...)

The mud flaps were not mounted on James' bus yet, but I would assume the body lines down by the wheel wells are the same on our Vanagons as those in South Africa (??). The part of the mud flap that rides up the side of the bus on the outside has two pins which suggest the body may need a couple of small holes to receive the mud flaps. The pins seem to be in a different spot than the holes in my bus where the old mud flap was mounted. (I didn't have my bus today and neither did James to see if the flaps fit our Vanagon's contours exactly.)

And why am I posting this? Just to plant a seed, so those looking for mud flaps know of the options. James said he can get more. And I would like to see/hear how they mount up. And what the cost to listees would be.

Please, I'm not marketing these. And I assume James will post a price and more info on the mud flaps.

James is at jscohen@sprynet.com
