Subject: '88 removing coil springs?

Is there a way to remove and replace the front coils without using the special tool shown in bentley? If tool is necessary, where can it be obtained / rented? Any homemade tool designs? One friend tells me he has used bailing twine to wrap up spring when in preloaded position, then cut twine upon re- installation, but this will not work for me as I'm sending springs out to be retempered.
