<< I was at my local VW dealer today, and asked the parts guy for the price on a 2.1L Waterboxer long block. It wasn't in the book! What gives? The short blocks were $2300, and he claimed that heads are $1000 each. I guess that puts us closer to the Eurospec conversion price, after all. >> The parts guy didn't know his stuff. The VW fish will state short block when it really is a complete motor. Also you can get a better quality motor complete from other sources. Fast German Auto has them for around $1500. If you ask the list for other engine suppliers they will respond quickly. On the 5 cyl engines, there are tons of them in the junkyards not getting sold because they don't break. And they are cheap because of it, around $500. Stick with 86 or newer. Use the Quattro engines because they have bigger valves, more torque. I believe there are 1990 or newer 20 valve engines too, that's the way to go. 135 to 150 HP stock sure is nice. See ya, Michael 87 syncro 87 quattro
