Subject: I found a '88 Wolfsburg Weekender, but i've got...

...questions.

As most know by now, I've been on this quest for the "right" Vanagon. Looked at many, but for various reasons - ranging from staring at a piece of @&%# to wrong place, wrong time - a deal hasn't been made yet.

Well, looks like things may change. Found a sweet '88 Wolfsburg Weekender in what I consider to be great condition. Burgandy in color, automatic, working a/c, jump seats, table, origional curtains(!!!), working origional cup holders(!!!!!!!), even a Bentley manual under the rear seat. The engine runs fine, or at least it does as far as I can tell. Compression in all cylinders is in the 115 - 120 range, no leaking heads, blue coolant in the bottle. Seller says everything is origional, heads never done, with 95k miles.

Here's the down part. There are some serious rust spots here and there. Lower right corner of driver side rear window - size of a quarter, going under the window gasket. Passanger side rear side marker - bubbling up, pushing marker light away from the body of the van. Passenger side front door - B-piller, where door seal meets door. Front of the van - you know, the part that'd be cover by a bra - has numerous stone chips starting to bubble up under the paint.

Otherwise, this Vanagon is in great condition. Seller asking $5995US. What's it gonna take to eliminate the rust? Can I Dremel the rust spots, put a coat of primer, and then a top coat of paint? Does VW even have paint available for colors from '88? What about rust under the window gasket? Seems to me that gonna be a bear to fix.

Comments appreciated...
