Subject: Bosch Relay Solenoid Fix - Help
Comments: To: vw <vanagon@VANAGON.COM>

I'm new to the list and in the archives found the oft repeated solution for a balky solenoid, to wit: installing a Bosch relay as outlined by Jack F and others.

I have installed it on an 84 Westy per instructions but have a problem: The lead from the ignition switch (Red/Blk stripe) is still hot (12V) after the engine is running and key returned to "run" position. Fault is not in the ignition switch, only get it when engine is actually running. At idle it is too weak to make any difference, but as engine speeds up it is enough to trip the relay and thus re-engage the starter (ouch!).

Any idea where this mystery voltage is coming from? Is it normal and the relay solution just works too good? Have had the vehicle for 9 years with zero problems other than the rare balky start when battery less than perfect and outside temps hot or cold. Thanks.
