Jim, and all,

After replacing the o-ring behind the oil cooler, I had a similar water
leak.  There are several very small hoses from the pump to the oil cooler.
One of mine split.  I was able to drive another 25 miles by stopping every 5
miles and adding more water to the coolant reservoir.  Fortunately I had a 5
gallon jug with me.

I would recommend replacing those hoses;  there are actually three - two
attached to the oil cooler and one attaching a small pipe to the water pump.
And replace the o-ring behind the oil cooler if you haven't yet.  At least
on '86 the o-ring has been replaced by a better version.

I have part numbers if needed.  The hoses are not real cheap, but I couldn't
find alternatives.
