I just saw your post on the diesel list. I have a 82 diesel Westy with 38 k miles. My engine is perfect but I cannot live with the lack of power any more. I have three options: $6000 for Eurospec engine. complete brand new engine, guaranteed to work $3000 buy and wrecked gas car and pay to install in Westy $4000 buy brand new 1.9 TD and pay to have it installed

It might be more useful to compare life cycle costs including both initial investment, maintenance and fuel for a reasonable engine life of maybe 150Kmi on the diesel, 100Kmi on the gas and half that on a used engine. (Depending on milage and condition of what you buy) (Yes, many engines will go longer than this, but you don't know if yours is one of them so it makes sense to be conservative)

Please tell me how the van drives with the 1.9 td?

Quite well. On an 800 mile trip recently I traversed what little mountains we have her in the east (Appalachian, Taconic and Shawagunks), and it would easily go up all highway grades without downshifting from 4th.

Did you leave the stock diesel 4 speed?

No. I'm using a box with the 4.57 final drive. (Lowest available from VW, is the stock in 2.0 aircooled vanagons)

Did you consider the Eurospec or gas engine?

I was not interested in a gas engine.

I have been posting variuous reports over the past year. A search on diesel in the archives might be helpful.
