I could take a peek at mine, but since I'm the one who installed the thermostat in the first place, the result is hardly "official." :-)

I attached the wire above the screw (longest lever arm) since it looks to me the difference between the "full hot" and "completely cold" positions of the thermostat allow for plenty of throw. Try moving the lever arm by hand and judge the distance traveled above the screw and compare that to the movement of the thermostat and see if you agree.

As to the tin-ware, I know I can get it locally, and cheaply, at a wreaking yard, but I can't get out there for a couple of weeks. You might try Jim at Old Volks Home; I know he has a lot of used stuff for sale and might easily have what you need.
