Subject: Air cooled thermostat and tin questions
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

My conscience finally got to me, and I've installed a fresh thermostat and cable in the 82 Vanagon. (air-cooled, gas) I've got a few questions though, anyone care to shed some light?

1) How long does it normally take the thermostat to warm up and open the flaps in say, 50 degree weather? I've only driven it a few miles since and hadn't noticed any movement.

2) While laying on the driveway, I got to looking at my cooling tin and I suspect a piece is missing. On the lower side, I see some between the pushrod tubes and the cylinder's fins, but is there supposed to be another piece below that? Maybe focuses the flow more on the thermostat?

3) If 2) is yes, anybody got a pair they could part with?

4) Oh yeah, almost forgot. My Bentley is hard to see regarding the cable attachment onto the flap arm. Should I clamp the wire above the hold-down screw or below it? Does it matter? Seems like clamping closer to the axis of rotation would give it more travel...

Thanks to all! Carl
