The problem is the offset as ahs been discussed and you can see at David's
website at

They will be too close to the trailing arms and change the handling. My
ideal 15" rims would have an offset not more than 3 (ET 3). This might allow
me to add thin wire type chains with the appropriate tire size as well.
If anyone has 5 steel 15" ET 3 rims for the vanagon, let me know.
