If it DOES NOT have a dipstick, then it is a good car. The automatic trans on the newer VW's didn't get good till the non-dipstick trans. The non-dipstick trans uses a special synthetic vw fluid and been finally designed properly, mechanically. The transmission computer is the best too with this trans. The early trans shifted horribly and was unrilable. Make sure that if you do get the Passat with the good trans, that it has the updated trans computer (transmission control module).
