John My '84 did the same thing (as did my friends 85), it turned out to be air in the cooling system... Bleed it carefully and hope it isn't a leaky head. The temp sensor doesn't usually go erratic like you describe, though sometimes the connection gets alittle flaky. Try wiggling/rotating the connector a few times.
