Another suggestion would be a Surco (sp?) Safari rack and carry the tires up there. I have a photo of one these racks on my web site under the VW Show 98 section. What size tires are you running. I have a 27" tire in my spare tire well - pictures of it too in my Vanagon section of my web site.

Good luck with the spare tire holder and let me know if you find one.
