Subject: 86 Vanagon - Shifting into first gear
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

I have an 86 Vanagon that has recently developed a problem of not wanting to go into first gear. Sometimes it is not a big problem, but sometimes it doesn't want to go into gear regardless of what I try. Usually if I move the shift lever right up against the reverse detent it will go in. Sometimes I have to go so far as to depress the shift lever as if going into reverse and it will go in. Once I find the "spot", it goes right in with no problem. I have hopes of working on this problem tomorrow with a friend who is also on the list. Any suggestions or advice will be greatly appreciated, especially if it can be done on a Saturday, January 2 with all the attendant problems that will bring. Thanks in advance for the help.
