I just noticed that some PO of my '82 diesel van appears to have had a mirror stud pull out, and solved the problem with a long drill bit, extending the hole so that the bit emerged from the neck of the mirror. [S]he then cut a square notch in the neck of the mirror with the hole centered in it, and put a bolt through from there, replacing the embedded stud. Seems to work fine. Actually doesn't even look too weird. Total cost probably about $0.25 and time probably less than an hour.
