Actually, semi-metallic and full metallic pads wear the rotors faster than conventional pads. But they stop better, and last longer. This is one of the reasons that turning rotors has become a routine operation for some repair shops.

I'll bet that most or all of the vanagons came with some flavor of organic pads, although the later models (86 up) may have come with semi-metallic pads.
