Subject: Engine cutting out

Hello all. I am new to the list, and am hoping to avoid flames for
asking the same lame stalling question. However,I have rather thoroughly
searched the archives and found only one post that covered the probem
that I am having.
I have an '86 Syncro Westy, 130K on the original engine and heads. It
started "missing" a few months ago. It acted as though it was actually
shutting off then restarting several times within a couple of seconds.
It seemed to happen after driving about a mile or two from a cold start,
and usually did it pulling away from a stoplight. I suspect an
ignition-related item (Hall sender, coil, etc.), since the tach drops
immediately. after the problem occurs, the Vanagon can sit at idle and
there is a perceptible intermittent miss and the tac jumps irratically.
John Clavin posted a message in spring (March?) 1998 relating what
seemed to be the same problem, and I followed a couple of the responses,
but never saw what finally resolved the problem. I have been unable to
reach him off-list, so I am posting to the list in search of assistance.
I used an AutoForce diagnostic box and so far the only
fault that I found was the throttle position switch was bad. Oddly
enough,
I could not replicate the problem with the diagnostic equipment in
place.
To cover my bases, I replaced that along with plugs, wires, cap, and
rotor,
installed the infamous wiring harness upgrade, replaced the fuel filter,
ansd cleaned all the electrical connections that I could, including the
two relays above the coil. . Upon
doing this the problem disappeared.... until earlier this week. I
recleaned all the connections to what I feel is pertinent, and it went
away
for a couple of days, only to reoccur yesterday to the point that I
almost
didn't get it home.
I have thrown a good bit of money at this problem, and am looking to
avoid just sticking more parts on it trying to exorcise the demons.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.
